FALL 2024
It has been a hot summer, but like it or not fall and cooler weather is on its way. If you stopped for the warm months, many of you may transition to drinking big reds. While Jan and I continue to enjoy white wines and rosé during the fall and winter months, I understand that is not everybody’s cup of wine. If you are drinking red wine this fall, we will be glad to help you find some new favorites to enjoy with the heavier fare of autumn and, if you don’t like change, we can get your old favorites.
We will commence with our monthly Pizza Buffet/Tastings in October, always a crowd pleaser. Please see below for further details.
We look forward to seeing you as life moves indoors. As always, thank you for your support and friendship!

EASE INTO FALL WITH THIS FOOD AND WINE PAIRING
This traps the heats and steams the sandwich a bit, helping create that gooey texture.
Be gentle with the heat
Medium to medium low will result in a perfect sandwich
Jan’s pairing suggestion
Although the inclusion of the pickle initially threw Jan off, she suggests a sparkling wine (particularly a German sparkling). We have dozens from which to choose.
INGREDIENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS:
(Serves 2)
4 slices of your favorite bread
6 ounces shredded or very thinly sliced Gruyere cheese
6 slices of Genoa salami, pepperoni or other cured meat of choice
6-8 pickle rounds
2 tablespoons cream cheese
Mayonnaise for spreading
- Lay pickle slices on a paper towel and pat dry
- Divide cheese in four equal portions.
- Lay one portion each on two pieces of bread.
- Top with 3 pieces of meats, then spread cream cheese (if using) on each piece of bread
- Top with 3-4 pickle slices, jalapeños (if using) and the rest of portions of cheese for each sandwich. Top each sandwich with the remaining bread slice.
- Spread mayonnaise on the top slices of bread.
- Heat a large non-stick or cast-iron skillet over MED-LOW heat.
- Place prepared sandwich, mayonnaise side down, in skillet and cook, and press down slightly with spatula
- Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Spread mayonnaise on the top slice of bread and flip the sandwich over
- Cover the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes
Serve with a great glass of wine and enjoy!
Unusual Drinking Laws Around the World
Just in case you decide to leave Cincinnati for a trip, here are some quirky laws regarding drinking you may find of use. It is highly unlikely these laws on the books would be enforced, but you never know.
Does your trip involve livestock?
In Scotland, it is illegal to be drunk and in charge of a cow. Actually, the same goes for the U.S.
How about your mode of transportation?
In Colorado, it is illegal to drink while on horseback.
In Germany, it is illegal to ride a bike while drunk.
Fancy going to a bar while away?
Just remember, in the UK, it is illegal to be drunk in a pub.
Wives, you have great power and no power, depending on where you travel.
In Pennsylvania, a man must obtain a note of permission from his wife before purchasing any form of alcohol for his own personal use.
In Bolivia, married women can only drink one glass of wine at bars.
Watch your choice of glass!
Yes, it’s still on the books. It is illegal to drink any form of wine from a teacup in Kansas.
And finally, we Ohioans have our own weird law.
In Ohio, it is illegal to get a fish drunk.
RUBY PORT AND S’MORES
The next time you make the quintessential fall treat, try pairing your s’more with Ruby Port. This dessert wine matches the sweetness in the marshmallow and graham cracker while the fruit of the wine complements the chocolate.
Fancy up that campfire!
