As vacation and warm summer days wind down, it is not too early to start thinking of the fall. Cooler weather is (hopefully) just around the corner and for those of you who drink different wines dependent on the season, it is never too early to think about something new or different for the fall.

While Jan and I often do drink more red wine as the weather cools and menus change to more hearty fare, we still enjoy a nice rosé or hearty White Burgundy. That said, it is important to drink what you like as many of you never move away from red wines in the summer, so there is no transition in the fall.

We will be happy to help you find something different to complement fall’s hearty fare; we likely will have an old favorite that would once again work for you. If you would like to experiment and try another style or type of wine, we are here to help you explore what is out there.

Jan is always happy to give advice on how to best complement different types of food with whatever type of wine you might choose. We will, of course, offer a broad selection of wines new to the store as well as some old favorites in our Wine Stations, so continue to check our Facebook and other social media resources for information.

EASE INTO FALL WITH THIS FOOD AND WINE PAIRING BLACK PEPPER AND HONEY GRILLED CHEESE WITH ROSÉ
IMG_4869.jpeg
Rosés need not be banished until next summer.  A crisp rosé pairs perfectly with the creaminess of the cheese and sweet notes of honey, making this the perfect meal to bridge the seasons.

With just a few carefully chosen ingredients, you can present an ultra-indulgent lunch or dinner.  An interesting honey, cracked pepper using a mortar and pestle, good quality cheese and bread, and flaky sea salt elevate this dish miles beyond the mundane. Our hope: shop locally whenever possible.

INGREDIENTS AND PREPARATION
Note: this dish is infinitely customizable.  Personalize with your favorite bread, cheese, etc. to make it your own.   And yes; utensils are a must.  Serves 2.4 slices of bread (perhaps a ciabatta or a good butter top bread)1/2 pound of a high moisture cheese (ex.—young Gouda, Butterkäse, or Talleggio are great choices)Good quality butterFresh cracked pepper, to taste3 tablespoons honey, or to tasteFlaked sea saltPreheat a skillet or electric griddle to medium-high heat.  Butter bread slices on one side; top unbuttered side with cheese slices. WHAT’S YOUR BEST GUESS?
Have you ever thought of how many grapes go into a single bottle of a standard 75 cl bottle of wine?

The answer may surprise you. Ponder your guess over a glass of wine, then find the answer at the end of this email.

IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD JAN’S FOCACCIA AND BAGELS, YOU HAVE NOT TASTED THE BEST. Jan’s focaccia is a sourdough base full of air holes and a nice chewy texture, saturated with olive oil and fresh ingredients like rosemary, Asiago, Parmesan, crushed peppercorns and flaked salt. Her bagels are also sourdough, boiled and baked with a variety of toppings and loaded with ingredients such as Parmesan, peppercorns, poppyseed, sesame seed, dried figs and walnuts and of course, the everything bagel topping.Jan’s products are chewy with a hint of tanginess from the sourdough.  These are a labor or love; because of the sourdough method Jan uses, both breads take 2-3 days to complete.
